Two-Faced: The End

My kid posted the last page of the comic, Two-Faced, which she has been writing and drawing since she was fourteen years old -- almost three years of work.

It's a lovely page, so that's one thing:

And the comic itself has done very well -- she routinely got hundreds of comments for each page, and has, I believe now, almost 3000 followers.

It features as its main character a cat born with with two faces -- a birth defect; cats with this defect are known as Janus cats. The most famous of these Janus cats was Frank and Louie, or sometimes Frankenlouie. The main character of Two-Faced is Janice, whose third eye gives her the power to see both into the future and into the past. Unfortunately, her home turf becomes center stage for a war.

Our favorite up-and-coming artist just had her wisdom teeth out, and is now recovering, under opiates, which she is finding very pleasant.

But before that experience, she drew this:

I love the light and color best. She likes the hands.  Look at those hands!

Bragging on My Kid

This morning, over her waffles:

The Kid: I was reading in this how to draw manga book...

Me: (not my best before morning coffee) mrf.

The Kid: The guy writing it, he says, well, women characters, they're all drawn beautiful, and that's not very interesting, so we'll just skip to the male characters.

Me: (lifting my head slightly) grr....

The Kid: Yeah.  Plus, that's exactly opposite what Scott McCloud in Making Comics says.  He says how you should draw all your characters interesting, how that's your job as a cartoonist.

Me: (thinking about how much I really like this kid): vrrrr...

The Kid: So I quit reading that stupid book.

Me: Good plan.

The Kid: Plus it's not true.  If you look at Bleach, for instance, none of the female character look alike.  Even if they are all beautiful.  Want me to get the books?

Me: (oh please not before coffee...) urrrr--

(Too late, she has fled the kitchen, off toward her bedroom)

So those of you who are fretting that your kids will become awful as they near adolescence?  Nah.  They just get better and better.

Thanks to Tree of Knowledge, I discovered a new web comic, which I spent way too much time reading with the kid today.

Questionable Content.  It's actually been on the net for years & years, so if like me you didn't know about it already, you've got years of catching up to do.  It's a delight, and I'm not just saying that b/c it has a main character named Marten too. (He spells it different from my Martin anyway.)  Also!  A cute little sidekick robot!
