A White Bear has a really good riff on what the South/being Southern feels like to those of us who grew up there and aren't that now and still are, sort of:
Wow, she hid the nail right on the head. I so know those women in those cook books, and I know how it is, not that Arkansas is so steeped in the South like say Mississippi is, but we still have our stuff. The things I like about the South. I love the trees, I know they have trees up North too, but I really love the way they are everywhere, and I love the community of the South but I hate it too. That's what makes me schizophrenic when it comes to my neighborhood. I want to be recongized when I want to be, but sometimes, I like being anonymous. The very reasons that she hates the South, I hate it. I hate that so many people are so open about their racism and make no attempt to hide it, and their open contempt against homosexuals. It breaks my heart, to hear these young folks talking about the others or their others in such deragatory ways. I know I didn't spell deragatory right, but hey, you get it. Right?
