October, Yay!

October is absolutely my most favorite of all months out of the year, for just such a day as we are having today -- dark grey and chilly, and now, in the late afternoon, a steady sluice of cold rain.  I am drinking coffee and reading Jean Webster's Daddy-Long-Legs for about the 10th time, wrapped in my favorite deep green thermal shirt, watching the weather and enjoying myself enormously.

I like February too, mind you, and grey icy days then; but February is on the downhill slide toward summer, and how I hate summer.  October means winter is coming, months and months of dark and cold ahead: my sort of days, stacks of them, just like this one, all in a row.

It's heaven.

I like the whole begging for chocolate part of October myself.

I like the cold and wind and rain and no sun. Yep, that's what I like.

Just last night I was thinking about how much I'd liked to reread Dear Enemy.

As a kid I always looked forward to my birthday and now maintain that October is the best month of all to be born. My granddad used to clear the brush in the fields, gather them into huge piles and then, for my birthday, we'd load up in the tractor wagon thingy (I believe it was made out of the bed of an old pick-up) and head out for a monster bonfire weenie roast. The cattle would always come and nose around, I'd get good and muddy in the creek- it was perfect. I miss that so much but love October just the same. The weather could be like this year round and I'd be a happy camper.

Web -- I love Dear Enemy too! I've never read Patty Goes to College (I might not have the title right) but I'm thinking I might look for it now that we've got Alibris and that available...

Why October is my favorite month: it is the month of my birth; apples are ready to be harvested; the weather is cooler with low humidity; the foliage appears; a few leaves fall off of the trees and I love to rustle through them while I walk; I can finally start wearing cozy, soft clothing and nightgowns; I can start using flannel sheets and my favorite "snuggle in bed" comforter. I just love October!

I got to read "Patty" as a teenager, but don't remember it as being particularly interesting. Still, fun from a completionist standpoint, I guess.

Think I will reread DE today.
