It worries me that so many of our students (primarily female) hang their heads and seem ashamed and scared.

I ask my students to write a research paper on some real question in their lives (which sounds like the assignment your student is working on); of late, those interested in weight issues are primarily interested in how to help friends with anorexia or bulimia. Occasionally one is worried about stress eating.

Maybe it's a slightly different sub-culture issue?

Lots are worried about other health issues, especially disease inheritance (alcoholism's a biggy).

At any rate, they seem like a frightened lot. (Men, too, though to a lesser extent.)

The biggest thing I've learned to making my assignment work is that they can't "know" the answer ahead of time; if they have a strong opinion, they can't use that question. (That avoids the diatribes about drinking age laws, for example, and would also force your student to either think of a real weight question or change topics.)

Good luck with your student! And you're right! They should be focusing on your class rather than on stupid diets! (Or better yet, mine!)Bardiachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11846065504793800266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8340684.post-1132574842799451982005-11-21T07:07:00.000-05:002005-11-21T07:07:00.000-05:00Real skinny girl in one of my classes, I mean real...Real skinny girl in one of my classes, I mean real skinny, in graudate school, tells me that she can not spare the calories to eat one tiney piece of pie. I am sad, spare the calories, what does that mean, she can't eat because it would be too much? Having just been told by my ortho man that I need to lose weight, and as if that were news to me, and that I can't walk to do it, so that means what, I starve, or have surgery, or what? Well, having just been told this and still being depressed about it, well weight issues are of interest and they suck. I am not gaining, so that is good, have not gained since I quit dieting, and every once in a while, I drop a few pounds, which is good. But, I am not ever going to be what I was before the drunk driver, never, I will always be fat. I can't run, do aerobics, even diet, like I once did so that makes taking off pounds a pretty difficult thing. It also means that I have to put up with rude ass comments fromt he medical profession, a profession that still believes Twiggy was a picture of health.zelda1https://www.blogger.com/profile/04212809913449846878noreply@blogger.com
