At one point the prof was discussing secular humanism -- how so many religious types thought it was bad, because it encouraged people to rely on themselves and their own knowledge rather than what the church told them was true, etc. On one test, there was an essay question: Secular humanism is bad because . . . and went on to list all the spurious arguments. Agree or disagree? After grading the tests, the prof reamed out the class because all but two of us (I was one) agreed with the spurious arguments. Some of the other students were sophomores, juniors, seniors . . . and apparently, most of them had gotten that far through college without ever learning to think for themselves.
